20,396 international runs, 66 centuries in tests, and ODI cricket since 2010. In the last ten year, international cricket hasn’t come across a more dominant force than the phenomenal Virat Kohli. To put his dominance into perspective, the next highest run-scorer in the same period has been England’s Joe Root with 14,678 runs.

The ICC is set to award the “Cricketer of the Decade” award soon and it is almost impossible to look past Virat Kohli. In the past decade, Virat Kohli entered an Indian team overloaded with legends. Playing in a team that included the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Sehwag, and Gambhir, Kohli started the decade by winning the 2011 edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.

Kohli played a pivotal role in the Indian team led by MS Dhoni that went on to win the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy in England. Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, team India achieved the #1 ranking in all three formats of the game. In 2014, Kohli took charge of captaining the test squad as Dhoni decided to focus on the other two formats of the game.

Kohli, after becoming captain in the ODIs and T20s, produced personal stats between the 2016-17 seasons that can only be compared to the likes of the great Sachin Tendulkar and the legendary Sir Donald Bradman. An average of 75 in 2016 and 2017 saw him dominate all three formats of the game.

27 test centuries, 7 double centuries, 43 ODI centuries, and a scoring average of 50+ in all three formats of the game. Kohli the batsmen can not be compared to any other batsman from the past decade.

While Kohli has had great individual success since becoming captain, the team's inability to win any ICC trophy under his leadership can be seen as his only drawback in the past Decade.

Writers opinion:

Virat Kohli has become for cricket what Ronaldo and Messi are for Football. The personality plus the performances have made Kohli a superstar in the world of cricket. The likes of which cricket hadn’t seen before. Kohli in my opinion is well and truly “The Cricketer Of The Decade”.
